Make Your Morning Coffee Stop Green

discounts on coffeeIf you regularly grab a cup of coffee or tea on the way to work or school, you can use the time to help make our world a cleaner place by taking these small steps.

1.  Stop by a coffee shop along your normal route to work.

2.  Bring your own thermos or mug.  Often coffee shops will even give you a discount for bringing your own mug.

3.  Check out your coffee’s history.  Your coffee shop can let you know whether the coffee beans they use were grown and harvested in a socially responsible and sustainable manner.

Five Tips for a Green Workday

We tend to be environmentally conscious at home. During the workday, however, a lack of time and convenience may make all but the most die hard environmentalists fall into bad habits. Keep your workday green, starting with these five easy tips.

1. Refill to Reduce – Bring a glass or plastic bottle to work to refill rather than reaching for one of the disposable cups near the water fountain. Bring a mug to refill with coffee instead of using a non-recyclable Styrofoam cup.

2. Check Before You Print - Print only final revisions and review as many documents as you can online. Programs will now let you highlight, annotate, and save revision histories. Not only will it save time to become familiar with these tools, it will prevent paper waste.

3. Let Your Computer Rest – Many employees leave their work computers on overnight. Take the extra few seconds to power down and reboot in the morning. Not only will you prevent potential crashes and extend the life of your computer, you will help save nonrenewable energy.

4. Recycle It - If your office does not have a recycling program, start one today! Talk with your human resources department or facilities manager to investigate first steps.

5. Ban Brown Bags – Purchase an insulated reusable lunch bag if you bring your lunch often. Not only will your food maintain temperature, you will be saving the earth by not requiring lunch bags each day. Also invest in a few small leakproof tupperware containers. These will eliminate the need for throwaway sandwich bags.
